Formula

Percentage change compares the difference between the new and old values to the old value.

percentage change = (new value - old value) ÷ old value × 100

Examples

  • 80 to 120: (120 - 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 50% increase.
  • 200 to 150: (150 - 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = -25%, a 25% decrease.
  • 50 to 50: no difference, so the percentage change is 0%.

Frequently asked questions

Short, practical answers for this calculation.

What does a negative percentage change mean?

It means the new value is lower than the old value, so the result is a decrease.

Can the old value be zero?

No. Percentage change needs a non-zero starting value because the formula divides by the old value.

Is percentage change the same as percentage difference?

No. Percentage change uses the old value as the reference; percentage difference usually uses the average of both values.

Where is percentage change used?

It is common in price changes, revenue growth, grades, weight changes, traffic changes, and investment comparisons.
